Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest spoke with reporters yesterday; here are the hot stove highlights.

• The Marlins will raise their payroll to at least $85MM in 2012, writes Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post. By my calculations they should have over $20MM to spend on '12 salaries, if Juan Carlos Oviedo does not remain with the team.

• Oviedo, the former Leo Nunez, is in the Dominican Republic working through identity-related legal issues. Beinfest hopes for clarity on the situation as soon as possible, but has "contingencies in place." Beinfest noted that there are dates that are sensitive to Oviedo's situation, namely the December 12th non-tender deadline.

• Beinfest told reporters the Marlins' top priority is to add rotation depth. In regard to Javier Vazquez, he said, "I haven't talked with Javy since the season ended. What a great job he did for us, and we will check in with him and his agent. We'll see where his head is, and where his thoughts are. That door was left open when the season ended to at least explore. Javy's mind is wherever Javy's mind is. He's a veteran guy. We'll at least explore and keep and touch, and we'll see."

• Beinfest seems more open to trading young players, saying, "I think we need to become a little more open, just in general. I think we've been very protective of our zero to three players because we've had to be, given our payroll challenges. I think we can open up a little more now."
  This is an important offseason for center fielder Chris Coghlan, says Beinfest, after two disappointing seasons.

I have a feeling the Marlins are going to try to sign someone big by the unveiling of the new uniforms on 11-11-11. The next day just happens to be select a seat day at the new ball park (I'm going) and what better way to get the fans hooked (pun intended) on the Marlins then to make a big splash (pun intended again) in free agency early.

I'd be completely shocked if any big name signs that early. Usually big time FAs don't sign until late November at the earliest.

So I have two main questions heading into this offseason.

1) Do they sign Burhle?

2) If Leo comes back do his teammates still call him Leo or do they start calling him Juan Carlos.?

If our starting rotation can consist of JJ, Ricky, Anibal, Javy and a FA I'd be so happy.

I'd be even happier if that FA was Wilson or Buehrle.

Wilson I believe has said he wants to stay a Ranger. I think that only leaves Buehrle and I think we can get him.

Yeah, Wilson is a long shot, but you never know.

Ozzie could influence Buehrle to leave, even though he's been in Chicago his whole career.

Plus with Wilson you have to give up a Type A.......he wants to stay in Texas...

Dream scenario.

The Marlins have identified their center fielder of the future. Now all they have to do is sign him when he’s declared a free agent.

Yoenis Cespedes, a 26-year-old Cuban who defected last summer, should get the go-ahead to begin negotiating with major league teams later this month. According to an American League source who attended his showcase Friday in the Dominican Republic, the buzz is the Marlins have the inside track.

Yahoo’s Jeff Passan and Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus both profiled Cespedes, who could command a deal in excess of $30 million, along the lines of what Cuban fireballer Aroldis Chapman secured from the Reds. The Marlins made an unsuccessful run at Chapman when he was declared a free agent.

Cespedes, the source said, may be the best player ever to come out of Cuba. Passan reported the Yankees are “particularly hot” for the right-handed hitting, five-tool talent. The 6-0, 215-pound Cespedes played for Cuba in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Since then, major league teams have been salivating at the idea of signing him.

Goldstein’s piece details a see-it-to-believe-it, 20-minute video Dominican-based advisor Edgar Mercedes put together. It shows him doing everything from blasting home runs to sprinting on a track to showing off a 45-inch vertical leap to leg pressing more than 1,300 pounds.

Many a Cuban defector has been overhyped, but this guy looks like a monster. It doesn’t hurt the Marlins that Adam Katz of Wasserman Media Group, which also represents Hanley Ramirez, is Cespedes’ agent as well.

“This may be the big one for the Miami Marlins,” the source said. “He fits all their needs .”
